You Arrive Late or Miss the Test
In most cases, if you arrive at the test center after testing has started, you won’t be let in and you’ll have to reschedule your test (you don’t have to re-register; just change your test date. A change fee applies). However, some centers may allow students to start testing at the second hour for SAT Subject Tests.
If you’re absent on test day, you’ll also have to reschedule if you want to take the tests. A change fee applies. You don’t have to notify us of your absence; we won’t send any score reports for that day.
If you know beforehand that you can’t make the test date you’re scheduled for, you should reschedule as soon as you can. If you change your test date after the deadline on your Admission Ticket, a change fee applies.
If you know you’re going to miss the test and you don’t want to reschedule, you may be able to get a partial refund of the test fee or any additional score report orders. Visit Refunds to learn more.
If the Test Center Is Closed UnexpectedlyA test center may not be able to open because of inclement weather, a power failure, a natural disaster, or similar issues.
We post updated information about closings on our Test Center Closings page (on the SAT Suite of Assessments site). If there is a confirmed makeup date or alternate test center, that information will also be posted. SAT test center supervisors are also instructed to notify local media outlets when their centers are unable to open.
If your area is experiencing inclement weather or other issues, be sure to check test center closings on Friday night and also on Saturday morning before going to the test center.
If Your Equipment MalfunctionsSubject Tests in Mathematics require calculators, and Language with Listening Tests require CD players. If your equipment malfunctions during the test:
- Raise your hand and tell the test supervisor.
- If you have backup equipment, ask the supervisor for permission to switch to it.
- If you don’t have backup equipment, you can cancel your scores for that test. You can go ahead and take any other Subject Tests that you planned to take that day — those scores won’t be canceled.
If you’re taking a Language with Listening Test and the CD you’re given is defective, raise your hand and ask the supervisor for a replacement.
Canceling ScoresIf you feel you didn’t do your best on a Subject Test, or if your equipment malfunctioned, you can cancel your scores.
Makeup TestingA makeup test may be scheduled if your center is unable to open on test day or if a misadministration or irregularity occurs — you will be notified by the SAT Program. Check the Test Center Closings page for information on makeup testing.
- If there is a makeup test day: Only registered students can take a makeup test. Students who have already tested during the same administration may not use a makeup administration to retest or to take a different SAT Program test.
- You must bring your updated ticket with you to the makeup test. Access your online account and print a new, updated ticket with the makeup information noted on it.
- You may test only at the center for which you are registered or authorized.
- You may only take tests that you registered to take on the original date.
- You must take the entire test at a makeup administration. You may not take specific sections of a test.
- Sunday testing is available for religious reasons only. You may not test on Sunday if you missed the test on Saturday.
- The availability of makeup testing and the conditions under which test-takers are entitled to take a makeup test are at the sole discretion of the College Board.
